House Centipedes are typically a yellowish-grey centipede with up to 15 pairs of legs. Centipedes like dark corners, the underside of rocks, or decaying brush piles, and otherwise seek cool damp places to live. In addition, they can be found in basements and bathrooms which tend to be humid. Also, they are most likely found in the spring or fall when they are seeking food or shelter over winter. Often, centipedes can startle homeowners because they are surprisingly fast. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, a house centipede may often be found, "darting across floors with very great speed, occasionally stopping suddenly and remaining absolutely motionless, presently to resume its rapid movements."

Techniques to control house centipedes include using a dehumidifier to dry up the areas where they thrive. Additionally, sealing entrances to the home, and removing large indoor insect populations can be effective. Alternatively, the centipede can be ignored as they are generally harmless to humans. The house centipede, like the spider can actually be beneficial to insect control in the home. Centipedes are insectivores, killing and eating other insects and they are considered active hunters, constantly looking for their next prey. Therefore, if centipedes are present, there are usually other insects in the home to act as their food source.
