Thistle (Asteracea)
The thistle is a biennial plant growing from Spring to Fall. This plant is a tall cluster of wide, spikey leaves and stems. If left to grow, they eventually bear large purple blossoms. Thistles are known for having prickles all over the plant on the stem and flat parts of the leaves.
Interesting Facts About Thistles:
- The Thistle is the national emblem of Scottland
- The Thistle is also the emblem of the Encyclopedia Brittanica
- Thistle was believed to be a remedy for many conditions e.g. headaches and canker sores.
Thistles can be controlled by digging and cultivation. This method may be more difficult due to the fact they have hairs that cause a painful irritating sting and spread by underground stems. Thistles are a noxious weed and while not particularly poisonous they are harmful if touched or swallowed. Granular fertilizers and liquid weed control applications will also help turfgrass dominate the lawn and prevent undesirable weeds.
