Pill Bugs

Pill Bugs (aka Sow Bugs & Rolly Pollies)

The diet of these bugs is largely made up of decomposing plant matter such as leaves and wood fibers. They will also eat living plants, especially in wet conditions. These insects are known to eat many kinds of crops especially in areas prone to heavy rain and flooding. They aren't the cleanest insect, besides feeding on decaying plant matter, some species also eat decaying animal flesh and feces. They belong to the family of woodlice and are sometimes called rolly pollies. This is because of their ability to roll up into a defensive ball to protect themselves.

Pill bugs are occasional home invaders. If they have invaded a damp basement there may be a large number present inside the house. These bugs seek high moisture conditions. Reduce moisture with a dehumidifier and clean any excess vegetation and debris from around the home to help control them. Professional insect repellents can also help make areas such as damp basements uninhabitable to these bugs.
